‘Mum refuses to cover cost of kids’ activities when I babysit

A woman accused of not treating children fairly has defended herself against the claims after an uncomfortable exchange with her brother’s fiancée divided the group

Family days out are full of unexpected expenses. Even if you plan a trip to the park or beach, children soon find a new toy they’ve got their eye on (even if they have millions of bucket-and-spade sets at home) or ask for ice cream. Talking of food, you can expect the bill to shoot up quickly if you visit a café or restaurant.

So it’s little surprise one mum would want her brother and his fiancée to help out when she looks after their kids, alongside her daughter. Unfortunately, she’s ended up butting heads with his partner after requesting money.

Explaining her conundrum in a post to Reddit, the mum said the pair and their kids are staying with her family for a holiday. Her brother, Ollie, has a son, Will, from a previous relationship, and his fiancée has her own daughter, Nia. As such, she planned several adventures for the little ones with her six-year-old child. “Over the past few weeks, I’ve taken the kids out numerous places,” she noted, adding that when she’s previously babysat for her brother and his ex, they’d normally pay back the cost of the day. “Obviously this is not a hard and fast rule, sometimes I will tell them not to worry about it if I’ve bought lunch or small souvenirs but if Will comes back with something big, normally Ollie is insistent on paying me back for it. This works the same the other way round,” she explained.

Her brother’s fiancée, Lisa, has adopted a different method on this trip, however. “Since this holiday, and actually over the two years I’ve known her, it either takes her a long time and several nagging reminders from my brother for her to pay me back, or she just doesn’t. She will try to negotiate paying only a fraction of what is owed, saying she doesn’t have the money and trying to make the costs my fault ie. Saying I should have taken the kids to fast food place instead of a restaurant. This has begun to get very irritating and I have found myself offering to take the kids out less because navigating the money with Lisa has become so awkward,” the mum outlined.
