Allison Daugherty, 41, was arrested after witnesses saw her toddler son crawling around her parked SUV at the Bokeelia Fishing Pier in Florida as she swam in shark infested waters
A mother has been charged with child neglect after allegedly leaving her toddler son in a car to go swimming and meet sharks.
Allison Daugherty, 41, was arrested after witnesses informed police she had parked her SUV at the Bokeelia Fishing Pier in Florida before turning the radio up and jumping into the ocean for a swim, police say. They added Daugherty had left her toddler son in a running vehicle while swimming in the ocean to “meet sharks” on Monday morning.
The case came to light after a witness noticed the boy crawling around inside the car about 20 minutes after he had been left alone. The witness called police while informing them his mother appeared to be swimming further away from the pier.
Lee County Fire and emergency medical services responded after a detective first to the scene had initially checked the child over. A report says the child did not seem to be in distress. The detective then walked down the pier as Daugherty continued to swim further away.
