Mrs Brown’s Boys left viewers seriously divided on Friday night as the BBC comedy returned for its first new series in 10 years.
The divisive show made its long-awaited return on 8 September with four brand new episodes. It is the first series to be made since 2013, as only Christmas specials have aired since. The controversial series focuses on the antics of matriarch Agnes Brown, played by Brendan O’Carroll, who manages to find herself in the centre of her family and friends’ lives. And as expected, the first episode on Friday left viewers seriously divided with some even “switching off” while others were “absolutely buzzing” over the comeback.
Taking to Twitter, now X, one person said: “Such a shame #MrsBrownsboys used to be soo funny, now it seems to have lost its umpf”, a different account put: “#MrsBrownsBoys – #BBC why why did you bring this programme back!”, another follower wrote: “I give it a go every new series hoping for an improvement, sadly it’s going to be switched OFF!! It’s awful, what happened ?? #MrsBrownsBoys” while another added: “Ten minutes in to the new series of #MrsBrownsBoys and I’m already wondering why I’m watching it!!! Somethings you have to accept are dead and can’t be resuscitated! Mrs Brown’s Boys is one of them!! @BBCOne.”
However, other viewers were left delighted over the return and first episode. One person said: “Controversial but i’m absolutely buzzing that there is a new series of #mrsbrownsboys. I absolutely love it!”, a different account put: “@MrsBrownsBoys was fab tonight! So great to have it back on our screens! Please continue to make more! #mrsbrownsboys”, another follower wrote: “Say what you like about #MrsBrownsBoys but we all need a bit of light hearted, sometimes silly, comedy. Brought a smile to our faces tonight!” while another added: “omg tonight’s new #MrsBrownsBoys was sooo funny, the end bit with grandad hilarious so glad ur back xxx.”
