Move to combat Hollywood censorship in China could backfire, Congress told

The mooted SCREEN Act comes after incidents including most recent Top Gun movie removing Taiwanese flag

Congress has been warned about its plan to punish Hollywood for censoring blockbusters in China.

The House of Representatives approved an amendment that would prevent the American military from helping movie studios that are at risk of censorship, after the most recent Top Gun film was edited to remove the Taiwanese flag.

Critics of the SCREEN (Stopping Communist Regimes from Engaging in Edits Now) Act say that it could damage American soft power, as the United States faces a delicate propaganda battle with its strategic rival.

Mark Green, the Republican representative behind the act, says that Hollywood had allowed films to be “dictated by a foreign regime” and called for their access to military hardware and expertise to be curbed.
