The mother of Spain’s football president launched a hunger strike in a church as prosecutors initiated a preliminary sexual assault investigation into his World Cup final kiss.
Angeles Bejar locked herself inside the holy building in protest over what she describes as an “inhuman witch-hunt” against her son Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish football federation, who was suspended by Fifa following international outcry after he kissed Jenni Hermoso on the lips following her team’s victory in the Women’s World Cup.
Ms Bejar, a retired hairdresser, is holed up at the Divina Pastora Church with her sister in the Andalucia coastal resort of Motril, east of Malaga, where Rubiales grew up. She said she will remain there “night and day” until a desirable conclusion is reached.
Police were on guard outside the building and mass was called off on Monday evening owing to Ms Bejar’s action. No one has been allowed to enter the premises.
