Mother-daughter duo first to go to space together after winning Virgin Galactic prize draw

Virgin Galactic winners Anastatia Mayers, 18, and her mother Keisha Schahaff shocked as entrepreneur turns up at their home with good news

A mother and daughter revealed they only discovered they had won the chance to travel to space when Richard Branson turned up at their home.

Anastatia Mayers, an 18-year-old student at the University of Aberdeen, and her mother Keisha Schahaff, 46, will become the first mother and daughter to make the journey to space – and the first people from the Caribbean – after Ms Schahaff won the places in a prize draw.

They will set off on the expedition on Thursday from New Mexico on board the VSS Unity, run by Virgin Galactic.

Ms Schahaff said she had been on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Antigua to London to sort out her daughter’s visa when she entered the competition after an advertisement popped up.
