More Scottish people are turning to private healthcare amid long waits for NHS treatment, figures show, as Humza Yousaf was accused of inaction in reducing long delays.
About 43,000 Scots paid for private treatment in the last financial year, up 8 per cent on the previous year. This included more than 1,700 chemotherapy treatments privately funded.
The first minister admitted that the figures, from the Private Healthcare Information Network (Phin), showed “worrying trends” in the increasing number turning to the independent sector.
Yousaf was confronted on the issue at first minister’s questions on Thursday by the Labour leader Anas Sarwar who quoted the new figures on the rising use of private care by insured and self-financing patients.
The Phin figures show more than 7,800 cataract
