Chelsea are preparing a third offer for Moises Caicedo, who was excluded from Brighton & Hove Albion’s pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.
The club said that the midfielder had a slight hamstring injury, although there were counterclaims that he did not want to play. Chelsea’s £80 million offer for Caicedo was rejected last week and Brighton value him at about £100 million.
Paul Barber, the Brighton chief executive, said of his omission before the match: “Moises had a slight hamstring injury late in training and was pulled out for that reason. With a Premier League season just a week away it makes no sense to risk him today.”
