Millie Bright’s humility shines through as she’s tasked with captaining World Cup final

The defender has played every minute of England’s Women’s World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand and will captain her side in the tournament final on Sunday

Lauren Hemp and Ella Toone will dominate headlines following the Lionesses’ 3-1 semi-final victory over Australia, but England skipper Millie Bright was again at the centre of any Player of the Match conversation.

Toone opened the scoring for England against Australia, before Sam Kerr got the better of Bright and fellow Chelsea teammate Jess Carter with a thunderous wondergoal that nicked off Bright’s leg and beyond England keeper Mary Earps.

The strike looked to ignite the inevitable fairy tale ending for the co-hosts. But where angst threatened to creep into England’s play, Bright was unperturbed, requiring less than 10 minutes to reduce Kerr’s singular quality into a consolation prize for Australia as she coolly picked out Hemp with a pinpoint ball over the top that the Manchester City star converted easily to deny an Australia fightback.

Alessia Russo eventually secured the 3-1 victory, to send them into a first-ever World Cup final on foreign soil for any senior England side, men’s or women’s.
