The UK’s immigration system is currently “struggling to cope” because of an “unprecedented surge” in the number of people coming to the country illegally on small boats, a minister has said.

Graham Stuart, the climate minister, said the Channel migrant crossings crisis is “unacceptable to the British people” and the Government must “do more” to stop people traffickers.

He told Sky News: “The system is struggling to cope and that is exactly why we have brought in the Nationality and Borders Bill in order to have one stop processing, that is why we have got the Rwanda policy, but it is not where we want it to be right now and we are simply looking to balance that out.

“Thousands more hotel rooms have been sorted out. But it is unacceptable to the British people and we need to do more to tackle the traffickers in what is an unprecedented surge in illegal immigration.”
