Met Office issues AMBER storm warning as half a month’s rain set to fall in an hour

The amber thunderstorm warning is in place for Devon and Somerset until 4pm today, and could bring “danger to life” due to fast flowing or deep floodwater, said the Met Office

The Met Office has issued an amber thunderstorm warning for parts of South West England, as it predicts half a month’s worth of rain could fall in an hour.

There could be danger to life, said the forecaster, as fast flowing or deep floodwater is “likely”. The warning is in place for Devon and Somerset until 4pm today. Homes and businesses could be in danger of flooding quickly in the torrential downpours, and power cuts are also expected.

Meanwhile, a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued across the South West and South Wales until 6pm. A similar warning has been issued for London, the South East and East of England and the East Midlands until 6am tomorrow.

Regarding its amber warning, the Met Office said: “Heavy thunderstorms are moving gradually towards the northeast across parts of southwest England. These will bring an additional 25-50 mm of rainfall in places to an area which has already seen 30-60 mm of rain in the past 12 hours.
