The honour has undoubtedly resulted from her hard work, determination and perseverance through some of the darkest times of her life. While Melba, born Beatrice Melba Smith, began her acclaimed award-winning career in the music industry in the late sixties, a bitter divorce from record manager and business promoter Charles Huggins thirty years earlier left her homeless with $600 and a welfare check to her name. Before that, she had been worth close to $20 million dollars. She could not afford a bus fare and was evicted from where she was staying and lost custody of her daughter, Melba, Charli. The Tony-award-winning actress also later learnt that during their 18-year marriage, Charles had secretly used her name to get bank loans and properties, had found a way to sign her name to divorce papers without her knowing and also filed a defamation lawsuit against her, claiming she had defamed her by accusing him of physical and mental abuse. "He divorced me surreptitiously so he could get everything, even my daughter. My career was destroyed and stolen. It left me homeless," she told EURweb Spotlight: "I couldn't afford attorneys. I thought I was destroyed. My ability to even sing a song was taken." In 2015, Charles was sentenced to ten years in prison for running a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
