Meet Chris Loder, the ex-RMT member who now wants to be Tory transport chairman

The son of farmers in West Dorset, the Tory MP believes there are few in the current Tory Party who have a similar breadth of experience

Chris Loder thinks he stands out from the crowd of typical Tory MPs. Elected in 2019 as the MP for West Dorset, the 41-year-old took a different path to many in British politics.

Loder didn’t go to university – instead, he took a job as a rail guard aged 18. This led to a 20-year career in the rail industry before he decided to throw his hat into the ring in the 2019 election.

The son of farmers in Sherborne, West Dorset, he entered politics partly due to a sense of frustration. “I felt increasingly strongly that Parliament was not delivering the will of the country – regardless of how you voted in the Brexit referendum,” he said.

His predecessor was none other than Sir Oliver Letwin – who was one of 21 Tories to lose the whip for blocking the Government’s no-deal plan in 2019.
