The 41-year-old came into the spotlight in January as one of the 'pork pie plot' rebels - one of the 2019 Tory MPs who grew frustrated by Boris Johnson's handling of 'Partygate. Writing in The Telegraph at the time he described the No10 party situation as 'an embarrassment' to colleagues, but said the 'ultimate embarrassment' was hearing that Downing Street had had to apologise to the Queen because of a party the night before Prince Philip's funeral. "I think that was a mistake by Downing Street because actually they had the opportunity to reach out there if they wanted, but they chose not to…that's what caused the difficulty." Loder says he campaigned for Boris and never wanted to cause major trouble for him. "I wasn't prepared just to go on with that sort of nonsense," he says. Chris Loder thinks he stands out from the crowd of typical Tory MPs. Elected in 2019 as the MP for West Dorset, the 41-year-old took a different path to many in British politics.
Loder didn’t go to university – instead, he took a job as a rail guard aged 18. This led to a 20-year career in the rail industry before he decided to throw his hat into the ring in the 2019 election.
The son of farmers in Sherborne, West Dorset, he entered politics partly due to a sense of frustration. “I felt increasingly strongly that Parliament was not delivering the will of the country – regardless of how you voted in the Brexit referendum,” he said.
His predecessor was none other than Sir Oliver Letwin – who was one of 21 Tories to lose the whip for blocking the Government’s no-deal plan in 2019.
