The fast food giant will be replacing them with paper versions in a bid to be more environmentally friendly, but not all customers are happy.The new cutlery is made from renewable, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified pressed-paper, which is better for the environment than plastic.The move is part of McDonald’s plans to reduce its use of single-use plastic.Nina Prichard, head of sustainable and ethical sourcing at McDonald’s, commented on the change, saying: “As a business, we’re committed to taking action on packaging and waste and increasing our use of sustainable materials.”We’re pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it’s great to be switching our famous McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material.”READ MORE: Queen gifted three royal brides tiaras – but Kate & Meghan missed out Many customers noted that McDonald’s paper straws don’t work (Image: GETTY)However, not everyone is happy with McDonald’s attempt at being more environmentally conscious.Customers have taken to social media to express their disappointment and anger. Holly wrote on Twitter: “Eating with your hands would be more successful than paper cutlery. Their paper straws are beyond a joke and fall apart whilst using them. Grow up, it’s just cutlery from a take out.”McDonald’s confirmed the news on Twitter yesterday, November 8, saying: “We’re making a big change. That’s right, we’re cancelling plastic cutlery and replacing it with a new sustainable, paper-based material in all of our restaurants in the UK & Ireland.”We’re doing this to remove over 850 tonnes of plastic from our supply chain a year, as part of our Plan for Change.”
