Max Verstappen has new Red Bull target but refuses to make change

Max Verstappen has claimed Red Bull is targeting P2 for Sergio Perez in the drivers’ standings but has vowed not to give any special treatment to the Mexican. Perez currently lies just two points behind Charles Leclerc in the standings with just three races to go.Red Bull have never finished one and two in the Drivers’ Championship despite winning five crowns before this season. But, Verstappen has admitted he will not let Perez beat him over the final races despite already wrapping up the drivers’ title.The Dutchman made the comments when he asked what was next for Red Bull in the knowledge the team have already secured both championships. I think as a team of course we will always go for that. It’s not about giving presents, as long as we finish first and second the team is happy.”Verstappen was then asked if allowing Perez to win his home race was not the way he was wired. Perez was forced to let Verstappen through at the Spanish Grand Prix earlier this season as Red Bull used team orders to gain an advantage over Ferrari.No Mexican F1 driver has ever won his home Grand Prix with Perez becoming the first local to lead a lap during last year’s race. The reigning champion responded: ‘No. But I mean Checo is good enough to win races on his own. Of course, having your home Grand Prix is just an amazing feeling anyway and I’m sure he will do well.’ Verstappen equalled Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher’s record of 13 wins in a single campaign last time out in Austin.That means the reigning champion can enter the history books with a 14th victory over one of the final three races. Meanwhile, Perez has secured just two wins all season as he continues to struggle to match his team-mate.Perez insisted earlier this week he was not expecting any help from Verstappen to win his home race. He commented: “I don’t need anyone to give me anything. I raced all my life without anyone giving me a gift.”
