Red Bull have been a long way ahead of anyone else on the grid this season in terms of car competitiveness, but their qualifying pace could take a hit if a planned change is approved
Formula 1 chiefs are reportedly considering outlawing the use of DRS in qualifying.
Currently, drivers are allowed to use their drag reduction systems in the specified zones when on a flying lap. The only exception is when DRS has been disabled by race control such as in wet weather conditions.
It’s something which gives Red Bull an extra helping hand over their rivals. Their car design makes the DRS more powerful than those on the cars fielded by any of their rivals, providing extra speed on those longer straights where the system is permitted.
But that advantage could be set to disappear. According to German outlet Auto Motor und Sport, the sport’s bosses could removed the use of DRS in qualifying.
