Maui Hawaii fires: Man and dog burn to death after hero uses own body as human shield

Franklin Trejos’ remains were found covering his friend Geoff Bogar’s dog, a golden retriever named Sam, whom he had tried to save from the deadly fires in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii

A brave man died in the manic wildfires that ripped through Hawaii last week while trying to protect his friend’s beloved dog.

Franklin Trejos, a native of Costa Rica, had been friends for 35 years with Geoff Bogar. He lived with him and his wife, Shannon Weber-Bogar and their dog, a golden retriever named Sam.

During the devastating blaze, Mr Trejos and Mr Bogar, who was a retired fire captain, initially stayed behind to help others in their neighbourhood in the historic city of Lahaina, in Maui county.

But as the flames moved closer and closer Tuesday afternoon, they knew they had to flee, so each tried to escape to his own car. Mr Bogar’s vehicle wouldn’t start, so he broke through a window to get out and crawled on the ground until a police patrol found him. He was taken to a hospital and managed to survive, unlike his friend.
