Mason Greenwood makes first appearance in 603 days for Getafe after Man Utd exile

Mason Greenwood made his Getafe debut in La Liga against Osasuna Mason Greenwood has made his debut for Getafe off the bench against Osasuna exactly 603 days after his last appearance in competitive football. The exiled Manchester United striker was sent on loan to La Liga for the season in the summer transfer window and entered the pitch to huge cheers on Sunday afternoon. Trending Greenwood came on in the 77th minute at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez with the score 2-2 at the time. He then had a deflected shot which led to a corner from which Nemanja Maksimovic made it 3-2 with just minutes to go. Though Getafe had Fabrizio Angileri sent off, they clung on to victory to move up to ninth. One-cap England international Greenwood had not previously played football since 22 January 2022, when he turned out for Man United against West Ham in the Premier League. The Red Devils decided this summer that their academy graduate would not play for the club again following criminal allegations against him, which were dropped. A statement read: “All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.” Mason Greenwood will spend the season out on loan at Getafe Greenwood went on to join Spanish side Getafe on transfer deadline day and the club’s fans have been supportive of him despite the accusations against the player, which he has denied. The 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control last year. But those charges were dropped in February this year because of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light. Around 4,000 supporters turned up to the striker’s official unveiling earlier this month with thousands of ‘Greenwood 12’ shirts also sold. He told fans: “I am very happy to be here. I have been training for four or five months, I am getting up to speed and have been training with my team-mates and feel quite good. “We take it one game at a time and the next home game is coming in a few weeks and we will try to win and do our best.” We’ll be bringing you the very latest updates, pictures and video on this breaking news story.
