Mary Earps at centre of new row days after England star forced overdue U-turn

The Lionesses and Manchester United goalkeeper has been kept busy this summer with an historic Women’s World Cup campaign, a row with Nike and now a world-record bid

Does Mary Earps sleep?

The last few weeks for the World No 1 would suggest no, with Earps seemingly embarking on an impressive mission of self one-upmanship since the end of the Women’s Super League season.

The Manchester United goalkeeper not only helped the Lionesses reach a first-ever Women’s World Cup final–a first final for any England senior team since 1966–, but became only the second goalkeeper, men’s or women’s, in tournament history to save a penalty in regular time of the final.

Her exploits earned her the tournament’s golden glove award, as well as the unofficial title of the world’s best. All of which proved to be a prelude to what awaited upon the tournament’s culmination, including forcing sporting apparel giant Nike into a U-turn regarding their divisive refusal to sell replica goalkeeper shirts and becoming the subject of a world-record bid.
