Martin Brundle feels Max Verstappen shot himself in the foot

Martin Brundle can’t understand why Max Verstappen didn’t let Sergio Perez through (Image: GETTY)Martin Brundle has taken aim at Max Verstappen for gaining “nothing” from ignoring team orders from Red Bull to allow Sergio Perez to pass on the final lap. Perez had been struggling on the medium compound after the final restart following a Safety Car period toward the end of the race.Both Ferrari drivers and Fernando Alonso quickly passed the Mexican before Verstappen was given the green light to go through and chase down those ahead. But the reigning two-time F1 champion was unable to move further up the pack with Red Bull demanding he give Perez back sixth before the end of the race.Verstappen maintained silence on the radio despite repeated requests on team radio for him to slow down. The 24-year-old ultimately ignored all those messages before giving an explosive reply after the race, saying: “I told you already last time – you guys don’t ask that again to me, ok? Are we clear about that?”For Perez, sixth would have seen him stay ahead of Charles Leclerc in the championship standings. It may just be a two-point difference to seventh, but that could prove crucial for Perez’s hopes of finishing second in the championship after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.JUST IN: Lewis Hamilton fired Max Verstappen and George Russell warning Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen have some bad blood to get over (Image: GETTY)And Brundle can’t understand why Verstappen wanted to so desperately hold onto sixth when there was nothing for him to gain from doing it. “Perez had let Verstappen easily though on the understanding that if Verstappen didn’t get any further and past Alonso or a Ferrari, then he would be let back through,” Brundle wrote for Sky Sports.”This didn’t happen and so Max was duly told to let Sergio past before the chequered flag to help him in his fight with Leclerc for second in the drivers’ championship.
