Marketa Vondrousova’s message to teary Ons Jabeur sums up new Wimbeldon champion

Czech superstar Marketa Vondrousova is the new women’s singles champion at Wimbledon after a superb 6-4, 6-4 victory against favourite Ons Jabeur on Saturday afternoon.

Marketa Vondrousova has described Ons Jabeur as an “inspiration” after beating her in the women’s singles final at Wimbledon on Saturday afternoon.

Vondrousova, 24, defeated Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 to win her maiden Grand Slam title. The Czech’s victory against the Tunisian came as a surprise, as she was unseeded. She is the first unseeded player to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon in the Open era.

Jabeur, 28, has now lost all three Grand Slam finals she’s appeared in. The sixth seed also lost last year’s women’s singles final at SW19.

Speaking on Centre Court after her victory, Vondrousova said: “I don’t know what is happening, it is an amazing feeling. Ons congratulations, you are such an inspiration for us. I hope you win some day, you are an amazing person.
