The Independent reported on the shocking case, and revealed that, alongside the refusal, the letter detailed the immigration history of an entirely different person. The outlet reported that the Home Office claimed in the letter the man would "have retained knowledge of the life, language and culture of Lebanon and would not face significant obstacles to re-integrate back into life in [sic] there". The major government department also claimed there was no reason he wouldn't "enjoy" his life in India. The letter was also littered with errors, including claiming the man had come to the UK on a Tier 4 student visa in 2019. It was reported that the applicant's case worker, Nick Beales, of the charity Ramfel, contacted the Home Office about the errors. To which, they apologised for the "grammatical errors" in the letter but continued to insist the man could enjoy his life in India - even after removing references to Lebanon. The Nigerian national described the Home Office's response as "copy and paste" and said they must have been "embarrassed" by the mistakes. Under UK law, applicants are entitled to leave to remain in the UK if they have lived here for 20 years or more.
