When it was put to Mr Cleverly this morning that people had not voted for austerity in the last election, he said the pledges were made before the Covid pandemic and invasion of Ukraine. He said the Government will "control migration" but will not "turn the tap off to talent" but told Sky News: "You always have to make dynamic decisions in government. "You can't set out a manifesto and assume that nothing significant is going to happen in the four or five years of a parliament." 'There was no pandemic in 2019 manifesto' The Tories commitments to increasing funding for the NHS included a flagship pledge to hire 50,000 more nurses and hire 20,000 more police officers to patrol the streets. They also included levelling up the economy and seizing the business opportunities of Brexit and saw the party win its greatest majority in the Commons since 1987. Mr Cleverly added: "There was no global pandemic in the 2019 manifesto. There was no invasion of Ukraine in the 2019 manifesto. "We have got to respond to the world as we find it, not the one we wish it to be." Asked whether Mr Sunak will cut net migration or allow people into the country to fill job vacancies, the Foreign Secretary, who kept his role under the PM's reshuffle, said: "Well, those are not mutually exclusive.
