Wrexham ran out 3-1 winners over Manchester United in a pre-season encounter which saw Dan Gore given a straight red card and Paul Mullin sustain a punctured lung
Manchester United fans were left stunned by the decision to send off Dan Gore during their full-blooded pre-season game against Wrexham in San Diego.
Gore, 18, was given his marching orders after a late challenge on Andy Cannon in the 48th minute of the Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat at Snapdragon Stadium. The midfielder, who only signed a new United contract two days’ ago, went into a tackle with his studs slightly raised and caught Cannon just above the ankle.
Many United supporters were in disbelief about the decision to give Gore a red card. One said on Twitter: “Baffling decision.” Meanwhile, another added: “Ludicrous to send Gore off when the Wrexham player looked to have gone over the ball himself! Think the ref is trying to atone for not sending Bishop off. Dan very unfortunate there.”
This wasn’t the first contentious decision during the match after Nathan Bishop was arguably fortunate to get away with not being shown a red card for his challenge on Paul Mullin. The United goalkeeper clattered into the Wrexham striker just outside the area when both were making an attempt to get the ball.
