Wolves missed chance after chance in a hugely encouraging performance, but were made to pay for their profligacy with Raphael Varane scoring the only goal with less than 20 minutes to go.
The visitors arrived at Old Trafford less than a week after a managerial change capped a summer which bordered upon farcical. But despite the off-field chaos, on it Wolves were the better side and had good chances through both Pablo Sarabia and livewire Matheus Cunha.
And how Cunha didn’t open the scoring after the break, only he will know. With the goal at his mercy and with the chance seemingly harder to miss, he somehow conspired to fire his effort from five yards out off the post and wide.
