Former Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was on holiday on a Croatian island when he was taken ill and rushed to hospital, with former club Ajax issuing a statement
Former Manchester United, Ajax and Netherlands star Edwin van der Sar was rushed to hospital in Croatia on Friday after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
The ex-goalkeeper, 53, has been on holiday in the country. He collapsed and was taken to hospital by helicopter, and is staying in the intensive care unit, with the first 24 hours considered crucial.
Former club Ajax sent a message of support upon learning the news. Their statement read: “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition.
“Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”
