A man has apparently been left baffled to learn that his housemate was in fact his landlord, having neglected to read the lease that clearly stated they owned the property
A man has apparently been left startled after realising the person they’d assumed was their housemate was in fact their landlord, and proceeded to scream at them for “lying for over six months”, despite the fact that ownership was clearly stated on their lease. The “secret” landlord in question says their last grandparent died last year, and so they decided to buy their home from their father, who had inherited it after their death and who had no interest in moving into it.
They’ve lived there ever since, and in time decided to rent out the basement apartment, which comes with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a living room, as well as a small kitchenette with a sink, fridge, and microwave. A friend of theirs suggested they rent it out to their brother, a new teacher who had recently moved to the city where they live, and who was struggling to find a place to live within their limited budget.
They agreed he could rent the place for $650 [£510.50], a sum far lower than the market value, and he happily accepted, signing up for a one-year lease. Unfortunately, their living situation erupted a few days ago, when the oblivious tenant asked whether he could begin paying the landlord directly rather than giving their “housemate” money every month.
Taking to Reddit, the puzzled homeowner wrote: “I was under the impression my friend had told him I own the house, so I was confused and I told him we don’t have a landlord and that I’m the owner. He got very upset and screamed at me for ‘lying for over six months’ and ‘taking advantage of him’ by making him pay so much in rent.
