 A man who thought he was having a stroke when his face started throbbing in the middle of the night soon learned the culprit was a spider – and later ended up with a cyborg-like green eye. Teacher Stuart Vesty had been given a nasty bite by a false widow, which can cause unpleasant symptoms. The 50-year-old, from Sandwich in Kent, woke up on August 16 with one side of his face pulsating, and noticed it was sagging when he looked in the mirror the following morning. As he and his wife prepared to rush to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital, he noticed the crushed corpse of the spider in his bed, boxed it up and took it with him. Stuart said: 'We took it down to the hospital in Margate and it was quite funny – [staff] were terrified, they didn't want me to bring out the spider. 'I eventually saw a really great doctor and he said 'I don't suppose you caught the spider?' 'I said yes, showed it to him and he confirmed it was a false widow spider.' He believes it may have sunk its fangs in after he bashed his head on a gazebo in his garden the previous night. 'We'd put up a gazebo that day in the garden and I'm not sure if that's where the spider was, but I banged my head on the gazebo on the way back in because it was dark.' Hospital staff ran a series of tests on Stuart, including pouring green dye into his eye to ensure the eyeball had not been punctured and his sight was not at risk.
