Andy Malkinson was wrongly convicted in 2004 spending more than 17 years in jail and, even since his release, has feared he’ll be seen as a pariah to the rest of society
A man who spent 17 years in jail after he was wrongly convicted of rape is now jobless, branded the “worst names possible” on the street and is too scared to even hug a woman.
Police admitted “the justice system failed” Andy Malkinson, now 57, as, despite not a single piece of forensic evidence linking him to the crime, he was caged for life for the sex attack in 2004.
Mr Malkinson did not even match the initial description of the attacker given by the victim, who was dragged down a motorway embankment and raped in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Yet, even after the miscarriage of justice and Mr Malkinson’s release from jail in 2020, he was told he would have to pay for his “board and lodgings” in jail. Sunday Mirror revealed yesterday that a swift U-turn had been made on that decision after public uproar.
