 A man has tragically died after he was hit by a train while passing through a tunnel notorious for being used as a shortcut. The walker was killed after the train packed with passengers collided with him in Caerphilly Tunnel in Wales. Emergency services rushed to the incident near Caerphilly Railway Station on Thursday afternoon but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Despite danger warnings, walkers and cyclists are known to regularly use the mile-long tunnel as a cut-through between Caerphilly and Lisvane. It runs under the mountainside north of Cardiff. British Transport Police say the death is not being treated as suspicious. A spokesperson for the force said: 'Officers were called to the tracks near Caerphilly Railway Station just before 4.30pm on August 30, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed an air ambulance was sent but the man could not be saved. Transport for Wales confirmed the 3.48pm service from Penarth to Bargoed was involved in the incident in the tunnel and said: 'Services on the route were disrupted into the evening. 'Replacement road transport was put in place and ticket acceptance was agreed with local bus operators.' An inquest is due to be held.
