NEWS… BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
A man who spent nearly two decades in prison for a rape he did not commit has called an apology by the police force which led the original investigation ‘absolutely meaningless’.
Andrew Malkinson, 57, was given a life sentence with a minimum term of seven years after he was found guilty of the attack on a woman in Greater Manchester in 2003.
He then remained behind bars for a further 10 years on top of that tariff because he maintained his innocence.
His conviction was quashed by senior judges at the Court of Appeal on Wednesday after DNA evidence linking another man to the crime came to light.
