 A pensioner brutally beat his wife to death with a rounders bat at their home – and then went straight to the police station to confess. Tarsame Singh walked into Romford police station and told the front desk he had killed his wife Maya Devi on May 2 this year. After the 79-year-old handed himself in, police rushed to the home he shared with his partner in Hornchurch, east London. Officers found Ms Devi, 77, lying on the living room floor unresponsive and a wooden rounders bat was left nearby. She was pronounced dead after cops arrived. Significant amounts of blood staining was also found on the carpet and walls at the grim crime scene on Cowdray Way in Elm Park. Singh was charged the day after his confession and has been remanded in custody since. Following the shocking incident, a post-mortem examination found Ms Devi's cause of death to be blunt force head injuries. The couple are said to have previously run the post office in nearby Rainham for many years before their retirement. Both were originally from India but had been living in Britain for more than 50 years. Detective chief inspector Mark Rogers, who led the investigation, said: 'This is a tragic case and one which has left the couple's three children utterly distraught. 'No-one should ever lose their mother in this way and we will continue to think of, and support them, at this difficult time. 'Singh has never admitted what caused him to act in such a violent way that evening but we are pleased he has pleaded guilty and will now face a significant custodial sentence.'
