Majorca refuses to welcome British tourists next summer

Majorca refuses to welcome British tourists next summer – ‘we want quality not quantity’ (Image: Getty)Lucia Escribano, Director of Tourism, explained: “We are not interested in promoting the island in summer. We are trying to encourage tourists to visit outside the summer season to enjoy sports or our cultural attractions and museums. We want to focus more on out-of-season activities than sun and beaches.’Escribano explained Majorca has put in place strategies to avoid overtourism next summer including bans and strict restrictions.She said: “We are limiting the number of beds on the island. We want quality not quantity. It’s that simple.’The hotel boss argued that tourists are ‘willing to pay anything to go on holiday’ and said that prices could rise.Majorca is already one of the priciest holiday destinations in Spain and rising prices could see some Britons decide to holiday elsewhere.British tourists already have to pay a tourist tax to visit the island although the local Government has confirmed the tax will not rise in 2023.
