Madrid mayor Isabel Ayuso tipped as new conservative leader

Rousing speech after election has commentators touting her as replacement for PP leader Alberto Feijoo

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, Madrid’s popular conservative regional leader, on Monday called for party faithful to fight on in a Churchillian speech amid speculation she might take over from the People’s Party (PP) leader who failed to deliver a resounding victory in Spain’s election.

Alberto Núñez Feijoo, the PP leader, failed to live up to pollsters’ predictions that he would be the next Spanish prime minister when his centre-right party won 136 seats, leaving it far short of enough seats to form a majority government or even a coalition with the far-right Vox party.

As Mr Feijoo gave a speech at his party headquarters on Sunday night after the results came in, there were calls of Ayuso! Ayuso!

Politically, Ms Ayuso, the 44-year-old Madrid regional leader, is further to the Right than Mr Feijoo who paints himself as a moderate who sought to distance the party from the far-right Vox party.
