Liverpool are trying to increase their stadium’s capacity to 61,000, but work on the Anfield Road Stand has been halted after the contractor hit financial problems
Liverpool’s attempts to expand Anfield have been hit by a further blow after the construction firm in charge of the project filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators.
The Reds are building a new Anfield Road Stand which will add 7,000 seats onto the iconic stadium’s capacity to take it to 61,000. But the £80million project has been hit by delays ever since work began in September 2021 and now Buckingham Group have delivered a hammer blow on the eve of the first home match of the season.
Liverpool host Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday and the club said the planned opening of the lower tier of the new stand will go ahead as planned. But news that Buckingham Group now have just 10 days to keep creditors away represents a serious issue for the Premier League side.
A Liverpool spokesperson said in a statement: “Buckingham Group has made us aware that it has filed for a notice of intention to appoint administrators. This filing does not impact the planned opening of the new Anfield Road Stand’s lower tier on Saturday for the match against Bournemouth.
