Liverpool sporting director details contract clause as “attractive” transfer market eyed

Jorg Schmadtke has the option to leave his role as Liverpool’s sporting director at the end of the summer transfer window – despite only joining the club two months ago

Liverpool’s sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will continue to target his “home” German market after signing Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Reds triggered Szoboszlai’s £60million release clause at RB Leipzig to bring the Hungary captain to Merseyside. He was their second signing of the summer transfer window after Alexis Mac Allister, who arrived from Brighton for an initial £35m.

Schmadtke was appointed by Liverpool in May to replace the departing Julian Ward. The 59-year-old signed a one-year deal with the Reds, but that contract includes a break clause which can be activated at the end of the transfer window.

There is an expectation Schmadtke will leave Merseyside in September, but he hasn’t made up his mind. The former Wolfsburg chief will sit down with Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool’s recruitment team at the end of the transfer window to discuss his future.
