Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has theory for Nunez’s dreadful Ajax miss

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has offered an explaination to Darwin Nunez’s horror miss in his side’s 3-0 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Uruguayan was given the ball on a plate by Roberto Firmino and he had the goal gaping, but his effort from close-range crashed against the post and came back out. He did score later in the game however, either side of strikes from Mohamed Salah and Harvey Elliott.Klopp believes that Nunez was “surprised” by the chance he had to give the Reds the lead in Amsterdam, which could have led to him missing the opportunity. “We had a tough half an hour where Ajax produced a lot of pressure and did really well and we needed to defend with a lot of passion in those moments,” Klopp told BT Sport.”You have to get through those phases and we had our chances as well and then we scored a goal which was exceptional, then after that situation it probably explains Bobby Firmino in a nutshell.”He passed the ball and I think Darwin was surprised as well with the situation, scoring before half-time would have been great but that second half, we scored two wonderful goals and controlled the game from there. He played with a big heart today and I liked that a lot, so hopefully we won’t be talking about earlier. We changed the system again a little bit, we had two and we thought it would make sense to go with a diamond because we would be closer together. We didn’t want Darwin always on the wing because we wanted him more central and that is why we set it up slightly different.”We don’t have to talk about that all the time but it is clear. We are in the knockout stages and I will never take that for granted and it is really helpful for the club and of course it gives us a lift, but for tonight we feel great and now in a few days time we prepare for Leeds.”DON’T MISSMan Utd finally have a Roy Keane successor ahead of Sheriff clashArsenal signing Milinkovic-Savic would be bad news for four playersFA confirm decision on Henderson and Gabriel bust-up during Arsenal vs Liverpool Darwin Nunez could not open the scoring against Ajax as he hit the post from close-range.
