Amir Soleymani is suing the Winklevoss twins – who featured in The Social Network – over disputed $650,000 payment
An Iranian asylum seeker turned Liverpool art collector has struck the first blow in his David and Goliath art battle against America’s wealthiest billionaire twins.
Amir Soleymani, who came to Britain a decade ago, has won the first round of his legal fight with Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss – the 6ft 5in one-time Olympic rowers and technology entrepreneurs whose combined fortune is estimated at more than $4 billion (£3.4 billion).
In a case with huge repercussions for the UK consumer, Mr Soleymani is suing the twins’ company Nifty Gateway, an online auction site that sells digital art – or as technology-savvy collectors call it, non-fungible token (NFT) art.
The row centres around an NFT called Abundance by the artist known as Beeple – real name Michael Winkelmann – which centres around a Gollum-type figure with wings, holding what look like bowling balls while caterpillars and other insects float around him.
