Lisandro Martinez suffers worrying injury setback as Man Utd star set for second operation

Manchester United have made their worst start to a top flight season for 34 years and the poor form of Erik ten Hag’s side has been compounded by a big injury blow

Lisandro Martinez will go under the knife for a second time after suffering a reoccurrence of the problem that cut short his first season at Manchester United.

Martinez, a £47million signing from Ajax in the summer of 2022, limped out of the Europa League tie with Sevilla in April with a broken metatarsal. He returned to Carrington early in pre-season in a bid to be fit in time for the 2023/24 campaign, but broke down again in the defeat at Arsenal in September.

He still reported for international duty that month but didn’t feature in either of Argentina’s games, although fears over a long-term problem were eased when he played for United in the defeats to Brighton and Bayern Munich. However, it’s since been reported he used painkillers in order to feature in both games.

And according to the Daily Mail, the 25-year-old underwent tests on Thursday, with deflating results. Specialists confirmed the fracture has not healed appropriately, meaning Martinez now faces a second operation and three months on the sidelines.
