German discounter says new site is proof of ambitions to broaden reach across Britain
Lidl has opened its largest warehouse in the world as it steps up its fight against Britain’s biggest grocers.
The German discounter said the new giant warehouse, in Luton, Bedfordshire, which cost £300m to build and is three times bigger than its existing big box sites, was proof of its ambitions to broaden its reach across the UK.
Lidl said the 1.2 million square foot site will create as many as 1,500 jobs and be able to supply food into 150 stores. It forms part of a drive to open more locations across the country.
The supermarket currently has more than 960 stores in England, Scotland and Wales, having opened 50 new stores last year and 19 at the start of this year. It aims to have around 1,100 shops by the end of 2025.
