‘Incensed’ Winchester residents said net zero increase is ‘insane’
A Liberal Democrat council has increased Sunday parking charges by over 700 per cent in the centre of town as part of its drive to become carbon neutral.
Winchester City Council has been accused of behaving like the “Soviet Politburo” and “carrying out a raid on motorists” after hiking up the prices in the centre of town, including by its famous cathedral.
The new rates in the city centre were introduced this month and will now charge motorists the same on Sunday as any other day of the week, as well as making them pay to park overnight for the first time.
Fees on a Sunday for more than four hours have increased in some car parks from £2.10 to £17 – an increase of 710 per cent.
