Liam Lawson causes problem for Red Bull as AlphaTauri mull over 2024 F1 driver decision

Lawson is one of three drivers in the frame for the two AlphaTauri race seats in 2024, with either the New Zealander, Daniel Ricciardo or Yuki Tsunoda set to miss out

Red Bull have a fresh driver headache after Liam Lawson declared he “wouldn’t be happy” if he missed out on a 2024 Formula 1 race seat.

AlphaTauri have yet to communicate a decision over who will be driving for the team next year. Yuki Tsunoda is believed to have secured his future with an official announcement possibly coming at his home race at Suzuka this weekend.

That would leave Lawson in a straight fight with Daniel Ricciardo for the team’s other seat. The New Zealander has been standing in for his more experienced colleague while he recovered from surgery on a broken bone in his left hand.

Lawson races again for AlphaTauri at the Japanese Grand Prix, having made in an impressive start to his F1 career in his first three outings. His audition for that seat has gone very well so far and, knowing that, the 21-year-old has made it clear he would become unsettled if not given a chance next year.
