Lewis Hamilton red-faced as error helps Max Verstappen to easy Hungarian Grand Prix win

Lewis Hamilton’s pole position lap on Saturday set up the prospect of a mouth-watering battle with Max Verstappen, but a horrible start opened the door for Red Bull to secure a record 12th-consecutive F1 victory

Max Verstappen took full advantage of a horrible start from pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton to win the Hungarian Grand Prix by more than half-a-minute.

The seven-time world champion finally ended an 18-month spell without a pole position to secure a record 104th in Formula 1 on Saturday. But he apparently used up all his good fortune in qualifying as his race imploded within seconds of the start.

A terrible launch allowed Verstappen to take the lead into the first corner, and also the two McLarens to pass. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri showed great race pace again, despite the Hungaroring being a track they said didn’t suit their car, and proved too difficult to catch for Mercedes.

But they couldn’t convert it into a double podium, as Sergio Perez made progress up the order to finish in the top three for just the second time in six races. And Hamilton was also able to reel in Piastri, consigning the Aussie to fifth place while the Ferraris had to settle for the minor points on another disappointing day.
