Leicester’s revival proves folly of knee-jerk sackings

Brendan Rodgers has benefitted from his owner’s patience and defied the terrace clamour, echoed by the media, for him to be dismissed

Amid the quest for Brendan Rodgers to find new superlatives to describe James Maddison’s performances, there was a more pertinent question to the Leicester City manager.

“Does your team’s form demonstrate the importance of patience in a manager?” he was asked after the emphatic 2-0 win at Everton.

If Rodgers was not so polite, he might have laughed out loud out the irony of such an observation given how fickle modern sensibilities are. Perhaps it is those of us watching – and indeed reporting – who most need to heed the lesson.

The early season pain is indeed a prime example of why the football industry’s appetite to hunt the next sacking victim is out of control and we must all accept culpability – the toxicity of fans’ social media accounts contaminating the mainstream to the point where every manager is the subject of a ‘where it has all gone wrong?’ inquest after a few defeats and ‘how it all went right’ overviews a couple of wins later.
