 Simon Brodkin isn't your average comic. While the 45-year-old is best known for playing Lee Nelson – a chirpy 'chav' – as well as fictional Liverpudlian midfielder Jason Bent, he's also hit the headlines many times over the years for his various stunts. Although he's hanging up his character comedy boots for his Edinburgh Fringe show Xavier, Simon's got enough personality – and stories – as himself to carry 10 hours of stand-up, if he felt so inclined. When asked the simple question, 'So Simon, what's your show about?' his response wasn't your bog standard blurb. 'I should have really smashed this by now,' he laughed, 'So I can give pithy answers to lovely journalists.' Indeed. In short, Simon is studying the topic of right and wrong, and good and bad, in Xavier. He's looking at his wife as an example of a stand-up citizen, who he claims society treats 'like a bit of a f***ing mug' because of it. And 'the royals – obviously,' he added, as an example of one section of society that's falling from grace (literally). And then there's those beacons of cultural consequence: TV personalities like Phillip Schofield and Huw Edwards who we expect to be the noblest people on the planet (but who we don't actually know at all). 'People expect TV presenters to be great people. Like Huw Edwards, they're like, 'That's not the Huw Edwards I know! He's let us all down!' You personally didn't know him, he read the news,' Simon remarked.
