England star Lauren James is waiting to learn the length of her suspension after being shown a straight red card in the last-16 clash between the Lionesses and Nigeria
England star Lauren James has received support after a moment of madness that saw her sent off against Nigeria – from the player she stamped on!
A tense last-16 clash was heading for extra time when James, who has previously lit up the tournament with a wonder goal against Denmark before starring in the 6-1 demolition against China, tangled to the ground with Michelle Alozie. Upon getting to her feet, the Chelsea player then petulantly stood on the back of her opponent.
After initially receiving a yellow card, VAR consultation resulted in an inevitable red. England still scraped through on penalties, but what involvement the 21-year-old has with the Lionesses from here remains to be seen as she awaits the length of her ban.
Coach Sarina Wiegman refused to condemn the forward afterwards, saying: “In a split-second, she just lost her emotions. And, of course, she does not want to hurt anyone. She is the sweetest person I know.”
