Anthony Davis has been a shining light in a poor Lakers side (Image: GETTY)It’s fair to say that the Los Angeles Lakers are struggling this season, and that’s probably an understatement as they’re currently 0-4 in the NBA. But even if their problems continue, their capture of Anthony Davis means they can’t even be rewarded in the draft. The Lakers are struggling this season as they continue to fall from grace after their NBA championship win in 2020.After not making the play-offs last season, their awful form has continued and they’re still without a win in the NBA. They’re one of only three teams who are yet to pick up a win, but if they really decide to self destruct and look to start building for the future, things could get even worse. The Lakers’ have gone all-out to hold LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Davis, but the latter is one star they pushed the boat out to acquire in 2019. The Lakers traded Davis from the New Orleans Pelicans back then, but sacrificed draft picks as a result, meaning that they wouldn’t even be able to enjoy a silver lining of signing Victor Wembanyama if they crash and burn this season. Wembanyama (Image: GETTY)For a team filled with big names, the Lakers are a clear example that slamming stars into one side doesn’t always work. James has aged like a fine wine, but at the age of 37 that can’t last forever, but Westbrook has deteriorated majorly.Davis is still shining, and they’ll need him to continue doing so as they traded all of their draft picks to sign him back in 2019. But although in the short-term they won the championship, their gamble hasn’t paid off in the long-term, and now they’re scrambling.Even if the Lakers decline further and in theory set themselves up with a top pick, the Pelicans have the ability to swap their own first-round pick with them based on their deal made when Davis was traded. And with Wembanyama almost nailed on to be the no.1 pick, it’s likely he will become theirs. With Zion Williamson and Wembanyama, the Pelicans could be a real force. Something that the Lakers were meant to be, but have blown over with ease. Every organisation wants Wembanyama (Image: GETTY)Their focus now should be on completing the season as strongly as possible, even though many are already saying they’re done. They have to sort out what’s going on with Westbrook, and the clock continues to tick for James.Davis is still performing strongly, and he’ll have to keep doing so in order to avoid a total collapse. But things could have been way better for the Lakers, especially with Wembanyama tipped to be one of a kind.
