Kevin Phillips: My dream is to see one of our players do something like Ronnie Radford and become a folk hero

A late autumn sun is beginning to cast a shadow from the new main stand at South Shields’ 1st Cloud Arena across the perfectly manicured pitch when Kevin Phillips’ talk turns to Ronnie Radford.

All around the Northern Premier League ground is the clatter of steel and busyness of men working as the gantries that will position 20 BBC cameras for FA Cup first round day on Saturday lunchtime take shape.

It is 24 hours since the passing of Radford, and half a century since he smashed a shot on a cabbage patch of a pitch into the annals of footballing history when Hereford United knocked Newcastle United out of the competition.
