‘Katie Price says she’s happy to go to prison. That’s baffling and infuriating’

Katie, keen for her legal issues to be ‘done’, says she ‘loves all the prison stuff’ and could experience what it’s like and make money telling everyone all about it afterwards

It’s most people’s worst nightmare, but Katie Price “genuinely doesn’t care” if she goes to prison – in fact, she wants to.

Taking the Nike tagline slightly out of context, she said, “They keep threatening me. Just do it. ‘If you do this you could go to prison…’ Just do it.” Katie, keen for her legal issues – relating to bankruptcy and debt repayment – to be “done” then explained that she “loves all the prison stuff” and could experience what it’s like and then make money telling everyone all about it afterwards.

“It’s a win-win situation isn’t it? It wouldn’t affect my job, it wouldn’t affect nothing. I wouldn’t be in there long,” she reasoned. On the surface, this outburst is as baffling as it is infuriating. Pretty much every other human being on the planet would be terrified of the prospect of being locked up. Age 13, I spent the longest seven hours of my life in a police station holding cell on frosted lipstick shoplifting charges, crying so much, for so long, that one copper kindly reminded me I hadn’t actually murdered anyone.

Maybe if Katie had done hard time like me, she’d be more worried about incarceration. As it is, she appears to have no fear. In a strange way she’s basically above the law now, which is worrying on many levels. It would be so easy to be angry with Katie for saying this, but what we probably should be feeling instead is pity. Empathy. This is not a happy person, and we’re all more than familiar with the many traumatic events she’s endured, so it’s hardly surprising.
