Kate Garraway ‘s husband Derek Draper is suffering from a “choking condition”. The former political adviser fell seriously ill with Covid-19 back in 2020, which left him in a coma for ten weeks and resulted in long-lasting damage to his organs. Since his first return home from hospital in April 2021, the 56-year-old has been relying on around-the-clock carers for his everyday needs. Kate, 56, has now issued a heartbreaking update as she revealed how doctors had to save him from turning blue last weekend. Speaking to The Times , the presenter told how her long-term spouse can neither breathe in oxygen nor expel carbon dioxide efficiently, which doctors say “is slightly poisoning his body all the time”. As well as this, the Good Morning Britain presenter said he has a “weird choking condition” which has left doctors baffled. She revealed that just last weekend Derek “just went blue” for “absolutely no reason”. Fortunately, two carers were on hand to get him breathing again as Kate and their son William looked on in terror. Derek eventually “sort of vomited” as the relieved carers knew they’d just had a “really near miss”. She worries she is “failing on every front at everything” but said she has to keep fighting on for Derek. Despite her thoughts, her continious hardwork with juggling supporting her husband, children Darcey, 17, and William, 13, and her work on ITV and Smooth Radio has been praised by many over the last few years. Since Derek became bedbound, she has not taken a day off from looking after him, the kids or both, and also only manages four hours sleep at night, the publication stated. Kate has documented her husband’s health battle in two ITV documentaries, which earned her two National Television Awards for Best Authored Documentary. Working, the presenter added, is her “equivalent of going for a cocktail”. “It’s therapy. TV work takes me out of myself and takes my focus offmy family’s worries. And it’s fantastic doing the documentaries [about Derek] and this book, because it really feels like doing good,” she continued. Kate went on to say she will “never give up” on her spouse and wants to continue championing the cause for those also caring for a loved one. “I know people are drowning trying to navigate through the care system. We talk about a crisis but it is beyond crisis. “It is very lonely and very difficult, and I at least do have that voice.”
